A Good Golf Course Is Half Your Fun

By: Ken Morris

What makes a good golf course? Many people think a golf course consists of nothing more than a large green lawn or field. While it may have this appearance from a distance, a good golf course is much more that. The way the land is laid out is very important to someone looking to buy land to make a golf course. If they choose a large flat piece of land, they'll have a lot of work and expense ahead of them if they want a golf course that golfers will want to keep coming back to.

Although hills may be something that golfers dread during the course of a game, they are also important for the course to help make the game more challenging. A couple of hills will work perfectly. If there were only one hill, some of the more experienced golfers would have it mastered in no time. Trees, those aggravating trees, also make for a good golf game. It takes a really good golfer to be able to shoot around the trees! There should be a nice area for the fairway, an appropriate area for the rough and some sand traps. Some golfers hate sand traps and claim they could do without them, but they add to the game.

The holes on the course need to be all over the place and not in a straight row. If each hole were the same direction and distance, the golfers would get bored very quickly. Even though many golfers complain about certain courses being very difficult to master, these are the very golf courses they want to keep returning to to better their game. These are the types of challenges that make the golfing fun. If playing golf isn't challenging, where's the fun?

The type of grass that is used is important, too. Bent grass greens work the best because the balls are as likely to roll off the greens as with other types of grass. Good maintenance of a golf course is very important in keeping it course golfers will enjoy. Keeping rocks and stones off the course not only helps the appearance but also will make it better for playing. Many golf courses have groundskeepers just for maintaining the course. Speaking of maintenance, the trails for the golf carts need to be kept in good condition as well. When the golfers are riding the carts, they should get as smooth a ride as possible.

Most important is the customer service the golf course owner and crew show to the customers. This is the major thing that will keep the golfers happy and eager to return.

Ken Morris writes for the most part for www.alicante-spain.com , an internet site about playing golf . His abstracts on golf in benidorm are published on his website

I cant tell you how many people come to my lesson tee and say, If I could just get rid of my baseball swing, then all my problems would be solved! My initial thought is always: I wish you had a baseball swing, because it would help you play better golf.

The key to hitting the ball farther with the modern driver and golf ball (which spins much less off of a flat face than balls of the past) is high launch combined with a low spin rate. Our goal is to get enough spin to achieve lift, while minimizing (hopefully eliminating) drag.

Check out Jean Littler's golf book for yourself and learn how to swing a golf club the right way!

How To Swing A Golf Club - Let Gene Teach You!

Learning how to swing a golf club properly is the Holy Grail for any golfer. Beginners usually start out by having someone show them how to do it. But even longtime golfers are often watching their friends or asking others for tips on how they do it. Then try to apply what they see or hear. In a nutshell, everyone is looking for the perfect way to swing a golf club.

For some people the golf swing seems to be a natural thing. Golfers who've played a lot of baseball seem to be able to transfer that swing to the golf course and are very successful. Hockey players who have practiced the slapshot for years, are also able to transfer that motion to a successful golf swing. For others, nothing seems to work. The perfect golf swing seems to be a dream that is unattainable. Which one are you?

It's important to remember that the basic golf swing can be broken down into individual sections. You have the backswing, you have the downswing, there is the impact moment and there is the follow through of the shot. Some people can put together all of these various components very easily. Others have to study each and every section and work hard to put it all together into one fluid motion. Then there is a factor of the pre-shot routine. Some people have a tendency to dally over the ball, take a few swings, back away, get set up again and then go through the whole routine a different way on each and every shot. And then they wonder why they have no consistency. accomplished golfers and PGA professionals in specific, have very set pre-shot routines that they do exactly the same way on every shot. And their pre-shot routine's are usually very quick and not at all a long drawn out affair that you see Sunday golfers engage in.

Of course, for some people it still becomes very difficult to learn how to swing a golf club properly. Fortunately for us today we have videos. We have videos of modern-day golfers like Tiger Woods or Ernie Els and we have video images of Jack Nicholas, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan and Bobby Jones. We can actually sit and watch exactly how they swing a golf club and try to emulate it.

Of course, videos are often not enough and golf lesson can be a tremendous benefit. Taking lessons from a golf professional and then watching how everything is implemented by the touring professionals can take your game a long way. Of course, not everyone can afford golf lessons, or at least not more than one or two. in that case, you can add something like an e-book that you can use to study and apply with your lessons and your videos. A book that has been highly recommended is one by golf Hall of Fame legend Gene Littler. He was nicknamed "Gene the Machine" due to his smooth rhythmical swing. Littler believed that, "Golf is not a game of great shots. It's a game of the most misses. The people who win make the smallest mistakes." A great philosophy and obviously the kind of teacher to help improve a golf swing and golf game.

Whatever you decide, use the advantages of video technology along with golf lessons or golf books to learn how to swing a golf club properly. Not spending time to get the fundamental down properly will impede your progress and make the game less enjoyable. Spend a few dollars targeted to the right knowledge and watch your golf scores drop instead!

Once the motion in your swing has started, there should be no interruption. It should be a smooth flowing motion from start to finish; not a series of abrupt actions. To teach your muscles the proper feel is to realize that the physical movements of the body determine how one swings the club. This is why a correct grip is extremely important since it's the only contact you have with the club and controls the clubface angle.

Some things to know and practice: First, and most important search and ask around about a respected golf instructor in your area, and get them to give you information on their program prior to starting an instructional series. You don't want someone giving you advice who is not qualified, and can impart poor information that can create bad habits.

How To Choose Ladies Golf Clubs

By: Elaine Clarke

The rules of golf allow a maximum of 14 clubs in your bag when you are playing a game.Each club is designed for a different purpose and will hit the ball a different distance.

Now you have to be able to decide which club to use and when. When trying to decide the length of the shot, you also need to be aware of the hight the ball will travel - this is called as the loft.

Usually clubs have a number on the head by which they can be identified. The higher the number, the lesser the distance the club will hit. Each club has a grip made of rubber, a shaft made of steel or graphite and a club head made of steel or alloy parts.

There are 3 types of clubs:-

* Woods

* The Irons

* Putter

THE WOODS

When golf was first played, the original players used clubs where the club head was made from wood, and this is how the name stuck. With the advent of ever changing technology club heads have changed both in shape and size and are today made from hard metals such as steel or tungsten.

* Ladies woods can be from 1 to 15.

* The Driver is used of the tee and is sometimes call No.1.

* Most ladies use the 3,4,5,7, or 9 woods from the fairway.

* Numbers 11,13 and 15 are usually of a much higher loft and are used to make specific shots (more of this in another article).

IRONS

The club head is usually made of metal and numbered 1-9. Remember number 1 will hit further than number 9. Also remember that the higher the number the higher the ball will go.

Wedges, such as a pitching wedge or a sand wedge also come in the the iron catagory. A sand wedge is mainly used as the name would suggest to escape from bunkers, and generally wedges are used to get more height on the ball.

PUTTERS

Putters, on which there is very little loft, are generally used on or just off the green when the ground is smooth and firm. There is a vast range of putters available to the golfer giving wide choice of shapes, weights and sizes. In fact there is no right or wrong putter and you should choose whichever give you the best results.

HYBRID/RESCUE CLUBS

The hybrid or rescue club as it has become known is a combination of the wood and iron, and is a big hit with lady golfers. Mostly it is used as a distance club, being more forgiving than a wood off the fairway. It has quickly become a standard part of the range of ladies clubs.

CARE OF CLUBS

Most golfers put head covers on their woods to protect the heads and stop them clanking against each other when on the move. You should dry woods off carefully if they become wet, wiping off any grass, mud or sand which accumulates on the head.

When rubber grips become dirty they can be washed with soap and water. When they become shinny they are ready for a change and this can be done by your local professional.

HOW TO CHOOSE CLUBS

There are many factors which can be taken into account when choosing clubs, but the most important is that you are comfortable with them. There are many brands to choose from, but some practice shots with demonstration clubs will help you decide.

Before you buy any clubs, its sensible to find an outlet that will allow you to 'try out' different types of clubs in order to help make up your mind.

It may not follow that irons and woods from the same manufacturer suit your game. It could be prudent to buy some now and some later. Lots of players do not buy complete sets and will often add clubs at a later date.

It may not be necessary for you to buy a driver straight away, as this is a difficult club to use. Maybe buy just a 3 or 5 wood to start. It could be that to get you going, a half set of irons would be suitable, such as a 5,7,9,PW,SW. To add more in later when you know what is required is a simple matter.

An offset shaft or hosel on a putter is generally a good thing for a recreational golfer (and many pros, too). Offset helps the golfer line up with his or her forward eye over the ball, and with a good line of sight. Offset also helps keep the hands ahead of the ball when the putt is struck, which is a putting fundamental. Many putt great without offset, so it's one more thing that comes down to feel.

When buying a putter remember that grips and weight are factors with major impacts on feel. Many believe that a thicker grip helps prevent wrist bend, but a
thicker grip won't be comfortable for all. Weight is entirely a personal preference, and you can find putters that run the gamut from feathery to lead-ish in weight.

Controlling the Course
In order to play the course well, you need to control the ball, it's a vicious circle. Control the ball, control the club, the body must be doing the right thing, the mind must be at ease and then you can control the course. We get two types of golfers at our school. Those who hit there ball and follow it around the golf course and it leads them on a very merry chase, and those who actually pick a target and direct, not steer, their golf ball toward the target. Basically, golfers swing different, but they all play the same. It's just a different target that they're playing to, a very long hitter is picking one out at 300 yards, a shorter hitter maybe picking one at 125 yards, but everybody needs to pick targets and break the course up into manageable bits of real estate. Very much like you'd cut your steak at night, you cut it in size bits that you're comfortable chewing and that's the way you have to chew up the golf course. So learn to control the golf ball, if you can control the ball, you must be controlling the club. If you're controlling the club, your body must be doing the right thing. If your body is doing the right thing then the minds probably in the right place and has been programmed correctly. Then, and only then, do you have any chance of controlling the golf course.
